Bobby Layne was not the most accurate passer in the game. He completed fewer than 50 percent of his attempts. But he was the kind of leader, who, with the game on the line, had few peers. "He is the best third down quarterback in the game," Browns coach Paul Brown said. The numbers that earned him immortality in the Pro Football Hall of Fame were 1,814 pass completions, 26,768 yards, and 196 touchdown passes, all records when he retired, and of course, two world championships. Even in the twilight of his career, after he was traded to Pittsburgh in 1958, he elevated the hapless Steelers to back-to-back winning seasons for the first time in franchise history. |
