Scholarship
Guide
2011-2012
Most colleges offer scholarships, and that's a good place for students to start looking. Some colleges have general scholarship applications, while others offer scholarships based on class rank, grade point average, and ACT scores that students will list on their applications for admissions. Scholarships may be awarded on a first come, first served basis until funds run out. Make sure that you visit your perspective university's website and search under Financial Aid.
Some scholarship sponsors send information and applications to high schools where they are posted. Other scholarships may be offered by a parent's employer, bank, insurance company, union, professional association, or other organizations and businesses that a parent or student belongs to or patronizes. Sometimes those applications must be obtained directly from the scholarship sponsor.
In
order to decide which scholarships to apply for, students should see how
closely they match the selection criteria; estimate how many other applications
they may be competing against, and how much work is involved in completing the
application.
Completing
scholarship applications often requires students to know their high school
class rank, grade point average (GPA), and ACT test scores. Many applications
ask students to list their school and community service activities, awards,
honors, leaderships and work experience, and references. Some scholarships
require essays and some ask for letters of recommendation.
It's helpful for students to save a list of their activities and other information including essays. Many applications will allow students to attach a list of activities. It's important to ask people for recommendations at least 2 weeks prior to the application deadline. Make sure to give a copy of your activities to the person you have asked to write your recommendation letter so that they can endorse you better.
*Avoid
scholarships that require a fee in order to apply*
